Country Music’s Suggestive Songs: Your Place or Mine Just like cheating songs, suggestive songs have long been a staple of country music. Gary Stewart known for his distinctive vibrato voice and his southern rock influenced, outlaw country sound. During the peak of his popularity in the mid-1970s Time Magazine described him as the king of honky-tonk. Gary had a series of chart hits in the1970s, including “Your Place or Mine.” ~ “The band just stopped playing/ they’re sweeping the floor/ the bartender’s asking, “Who wants one more?”/ and your head’s on my shoulder/ and lord, I’m feeling fine!/ where are we going, honey?/ your place or mine?” – Writers Carol Anderson, Rory Bourke, Mary Beth Anderson. Stewart took this song to number 11 in 1976. Johnny Duncan was a great traditional country singer with a few big hits between 1973 and 1978, but he will forever be remembered as the man who gave Janie Fricke her breakthrough. Duncan had a series of top chart singles including, “Thinkin of a Rendezvous,” which catapulted Duncan into the national spotlight. His star power faded in the early-1980s.
